Treatment Sessions at Concierge Speech Pathology

At KSE Speech Therapy, our sessions are more than therapy appointments — they are personalized, one-on-one experiences designed to meet you where you are most comfortable. Whether we come to your home or connect securely through telehealth, each session is tailored to your unique goals, medical history, and daily routines.

Our approach combines clinical expertise, compassionate care, and real-world application to make therapy meaningful and effective. Below, you’ll find an overview of how we address some of the most common concerns: dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), aphasia (language impairment), and cognitive-communication changes.

Dysphagia (Swallowing Therapy)

Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) can impact nutrition, safety, and quality of life. Left untreated, dysphagia increases the risk of aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and social isolation.

In a swallowing treatment session, we may include:

  • Strengthening exercises: Targeting oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal muscles through evidence-based protocols such as the Mendelsohn maneuver, Masako maneuver, or effortful swallow.

  • Compensatory strategies: Adjustments in posture, swallowing techniques, pacing, or food/liquid modifications to ensure safety and comfort.

  • Instrumental feedback (if available): We may coordinate with your physician for videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluations (FEES) and integrate findings into therapy.

  • Technology-assisted therapy: When clinically appropriate, use of devices like the IOPI (Iowa Oral Performance Instrument) or neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES).

  • Caregiver training: Education for family members or aides to promote safe mealtime routines.

Goal: To make eating and drinking safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable — restoring confidence at the table.

Aphasia (Speech & Language Therapy)

Aphasia is a communication disorder often caused by stroke or brain injury, affecting a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write. It does not affect intelligence, but it can deeply impact independence and relationships.

In an aphasia treatment session, we may include:

  • Language rebuilding: Structured exercises to strengthen word-finding, comprehension, reading, and writing.

  • Functional communication tasks: Practice in real-life situations, such as making phone calls, ordering food, or managing daily routines.

  • Multimodal communication: Training in the use of gestures, drawings, writing, or digital apps to support communication when speech is difficult.

  • Family and partner involvement: Teaching strategies that help caregivers support communication, reduce frustration, and encourage success at home.

  • Motivation and empowerment: Building confidence to engage socially and stay connected with loved ones.

Goal: To restore functional communication and improve quality of life, so individuals can express themselves and connect meaningfully with others.

Cognitive-Communication Therapy

Cognitive-communication difficulties can result from conditions such as mild cognitive impairment, dementia, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or Parkinson’s disease. They may appear as forgetfulness, poor organization, or difficulty following conversations.

In a cognitive-communication session, we may include:

  • Memory training: Developing personalized systems using calendars, planners, smartphone apps, or visual cues.

  • Attention and processing tasks: Gradual, structured activities to improve concentration, information retention, and mental flexibility.

  • Problem-solving and executive function: Practice with real-world tasks like medication management, meal planning, scheduling, and financial organization.

  • Compensatory strategies: Teaching tools to work around areas of difficulty while reinforcing strengths.

  • Proactive brain health exercises: For those seeking to maintain cognition, sessions may focus on strengthening memory, reasoning, and mental agility to promote independence.

Goal: To maximize independence, safety, and confidence in daily living.

Voice Therapy

Voice disorders can stem from aging, overuse, or neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.

In a voice session, we may include:

  • Vocal function exercises to strengthen and coordinate the voice.

  • Breath support training for clearer, more efficient speech.

  • Resonant voice therapy for improved quality and sustainability.

  • Education on vocal hygiene (hydration, vocal rest, environmental modifications).

  • Specialized protocols like LSVT LOUD® for Parkinson’s disease.

Goal: To restore a strong, reliable, and comfortable voice for daily communication.

Motor Speech Disorders

Motor speech disorders such as dysarthria or apraxia of speech can make speech difficult to understand.

In a motor speech session, we may include:

  • Articulation drills to refine clarity.

  • Pacing strategies (tapping, pacing boards, slowed rate).

  • Oral-motor strengthening and coordination exercises.

  • Compensatory communication supports (gestures, writing, AAC tools).

  • Partner training for improved communication at home.

Goal: To increase speech intelligibility and reduce communication barriers.

Head & Neck Cancer Rehabilitation

Adults recovering from cancer treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation) may experience changes in speech, swallowing, and voice.

Therapy may include:

  • Swallowing rehabilitation to address fibrosis, dry mouth, or reduced range of motion.

  • Voice therapy for hoarseness, weakness, or laryngectomy recovery.

  • Communication support using speech, writing, or AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) if needed.

  • Partner training to assist with communication during recovery.

Goal: To maximize safety, function, and confidence during and after cancer treatment.
